Global Market for Specialty Chemicals for Water Treatment to

WELLESLEY, Massachusetts, March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

BCC Research reveals in its new report, Specialty Water Treatment Chemicals: Technologies and Global Markets, the global market for specialty chemicals for water treatment is expected to grow to $33.6 billion in 2019, with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.9%. Corrosion inhibitors, the fastest moving segment over all, is projected to grow at a steady 6.1% CAGR.

Demands on the world's water supply are growing at unprecedented rates. Consequently, the use of specialty chemicals has become critical to the global water treatment industry. Corrosion and scale inhibitors used to reduce the deteriorating effects of demineralization, precipitation, and de-aeration, the single largest segment in this market, is expected to reach nearly $11 billion in 2019.

The Asia-Pacific region currently is and will remain the single largest market for this industry through 2019, with a market share of nearly 30%. Gains in this region will be driven by the introduction of more sophisticated water treatment technologies, including wider utilization of specialty chemicals in industrial water treatment.

"Although, the water treatment chemicals industry is considered to be a mature market, it is also one that needs to adapt and expand and is likely to increase in importance as the availability of clean water decreases," says BCC Research chemicals analyst Srinivasa Rajaram. "When one considers the rapidly expanding populations in Africa, South America, and Asia, as well as pollutants, knowledge of potential remedies for contaminated water sources becomes all important."

Ninety-seven percent of the water on the Earth is salt water and only 3% is fresh water. Over two-thirds of the latter is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. The remaining unfrozen fresh water is found mainly as groundwater, with only a small fraction present above ground or in the air. Fresh water is a renewable resource; yet the world's supply of groundwater is steadily decreasing, with depletion occurring most prominently in Asia and North America. Because of the growing concerns about global water supply, chemical suppliers are increasingly interested in the water treatment market.
